How to Make Free Phone Calls with Google Hangouts

When you have friends or family spread across the globe, making phone calls can be expensive. You don't have to use up all your minutes or incur extra calling charges, though, thanks to Google Hangouts. Hangouts is free in the US and Canada and has low international rates, so you can make voice calls, send text messages, and even have group video chats from your mobile device or laptop without paying a dime. ~ September 15, 2014

When it first started, Google Hangouts was a pretty awesome video chatting application: You could video conference with friends or coworkers easily as a group. Since then, Hangouts has morphed into even more: Not just online video chats, but also online collaboration (with things like sharing a whiteboard during a hangout or sharing a Google doc for review). Hangouts has taken over both video and text messaging communication--replacing the instant messaging app on Android phones, for example, for quick texting, as well as integrating into Gmail so you can send an instant message or make a phone call (all while processing your emails).

In short, Hangouts wants to be the one mobile- and web-based messaging app to rule them all. With it, you can send an instant message from within Gmail, a text message from your phone or browser, and, now, free phone calls from your mobile phone or web browser.

Last week, Google announced Hangouts users could make free phone calls to other Hangouts users over the web, as well as free voice calls to any number in the US or Canada. That means if you want to make a simple phone call, you don't have to use up your mobile or calling plan minutes to do so, because you could just use Google Hangouts instead for free--within the US or Canada, at least. You can do this in your web browser at Google+ Hangouts or from within the Android app and the iPhone/iPad app. (You'll need a Google+ account to get started and either download the Android or iOS app to use the new phone calling feature or use the Hangouts site to make the free phone calls, obviously.)

Here's how to make the free calls.

From the web: To make a free phone call in your browser, log into your Gmail account and head to https:://plus.google.com. In the left navigation menu, look for the "Search people..." text input box. Search for the person you want to voice call, click on the name, and then click the phone icon at the top to begin a call.

From Android or iOS: Open the Hangouts app (it looks like a quotation mark in a green talk icon), then type the name, email, number, or Google+ circle for the person you want to call. Then hit the phone icon, and you're good to go. Android users will need the latest version of Hangouts and the accompanying dialer to turn on voice calls, while on iOS and the web, voice calls are already available.

You can similarly send instant messages or start a video call from the same messaging window.

One of the neat things about Google Hangouts is it keeps track of your history (so you can have searchable instant messages in your email), you get notifications both on the web and your mobile devices, and you can block people from messaging or calling you as well.

For areas outside of the US and Canada, check the international calling rates, which seem to be much lower than typical calling plans.

How To Clean Up After Spilling on Your Laptop

Working on airplanes, in cars and trains can be hazardous to your laptop's safety. You may be faced with a mobile professional's worst fear - spilling a liquid on your laptop. It's a wise idea to keep a soft cloth in your laptop bag just in case. Follow these steps to clean up the spill and protect your laptop from further damage.

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

Turn it off. If need be, do a hard shutdown.Blot up excess liquid with a soft cloth. Don't use a wiping motion, that just pushes the liquid around.Remove any cables, external drives, removable bays and external Network Cards.Blot up the liquid that may have gotten on the removable media.Do not take apart the casing. This can void your warranty and you could damage internal components. Tilt the laptop from side to side to allow the liquid to drain out. Do this gently and do not shake the laptop.Place upside down so that any excess liquid that you couldn't reach will drain out.Use a blow dryer if you have one and set it on the coolest setting. Carefully dry the laptop, paying attention to the keyboard and the parts you removed. Keep the blow dryer moving over all parts. The minimum recommended drying time is one hour but it leaving the laptop to dry for at least 24 hours is preferred.Once your laptop has had time to dry, reattach the removable components and start up the laptop. If it starts up with no problems, then run some programs and try using the external media. If the laptop does not start up or there are other problems, it is time to take your laptop to a certified repair service. If your laptop is still under Warranty - follow those procedures.

Tips:

Water is the easiest liquid to clean up on a laptop. It is a case of moving quickly to ensure water doens't get into the internal casing.Other liquids, especially those that are sugar based will makes things sticky and is harder to clean up. Use a slightly damp warm cloth to clean up sugar based liquids.

What You Need:

Clean soft cloth.Blow dryerTime - to let the laptop dry out.

How to Automatically Backup the Photos and...

Your smartphone isn't just a tiny computer that fits in your pocket, it's also a great camera for capturing life's best moments anywhere you go. Whether you use your phone for work or personal reasons (or both), here's how you can easily and instantly backup the photos and videos stored on your mobile phone to your computer or online storage.

Imagine taking lots of photos at an important event and then losing your phone or your phone crashing, taking all the photos with them. The backup options below will not only save those important photos and memories, they also make it easier to organize your photos and videos in one place (instead of scattered between multiple devices). It takes just a couple of taps to get started. ~ October 5, 2013

  ?

Popular file syncing and online storage tool, Dropbox, offers a convenient automatic upload of photos and videos taken with your phone or tablet (as well as photos and videos from a camera or SD card connected to your computer). Photos and videos taken on your phone are saved wirelessly to a Camera Uploads folder on Dropbox via the Android or iOS app. Although the 2GB of free space that Dropbox gives you can quickly get eaten up by tons of mobile photos and videos, there are lots of ways to earn more Dropbox storage space (such as connecting Dropbox with the Mailbox app in iOS).

Before You Decide to Telecommute: Telecommuting...

Telecommuters (a.k.a., remote workers or teleworkers) enjoy many great benefits, but there are also downsides. Before you decide to explore a remote work arrangement, here's what you should consider/ask yourself:

Do the telecommuting pros outweight the cons for you?

Telecommuters enjoy:

More flexibility and control over working environment and scheduleIncreased productivity: Fewer distractions; work at your own paceLess stress: Avoid rush hour, office politics, cubicles and harsh lightingGreater work/life balance: Stay closer to the people you love

However, telecommuters are also more vulnerable to:

Isolation: You may feel left out of or miss office socializingDistractions at home: chores, home deliveries, family interruptions, etc. may replace office disruptionsBecoming a workaholic: without firm boundaries, you may feel like--or end up--always working

Do you have the personal qualities needed to be a successful remote worker?

Teleworkers need to have:

Self-sufficiency and motivation: Since no one's watching over your shoulder, you need to be self-motivatedGood communication (especially writing) skills: Email and phone will replace most in-person communicationsOutside relationships: Since you'll be away from the in-office community, you may need to establish stronger friendships outside of workOrganization skills: Your desk and your files are really yours to maintainGeneral technology comfort: Telecommuters need to be able to perform basic computer tasks and use online technologies like email, IM, and web conferencing

Do you have an appropriate office for remote work?

Sure, technology makes it easy these days to stay in touch anywhere and anytime, but if your proposed remote work environment is your unfinished leaky basement and all you have is dial-up Internet service, that's a recipe for disaster.

Thankfully, the tech requirements and general guidelines for setting up a home office are really minimal. If you have a computer, decent Internet connection, and can carve out a comfortable, productive space for working at home--it doesn't have to be an entire room--you should be fine.

Is your job suited for remote work?

This is a make-or-break question that will be evaluated by your supervisor/employer, so be honest with yourself about how much of your work can be done remotely. Most knowledge-based work can be done outside of the office, but jobs requiring your physical presence (e.g., teaching or medical care) will be tougher to negotiate for telecommuting. A sign of the times, however--half of US school districts offer online courses and online doctor consultations are growing. So even traditional occupations may be translated into telecommuting positions.

The key here is finding out how well the telecommuting workstyle fits you.

Wireless Networking FAQs

Wireless technologies and mobile work tend to go hand in hand. Here's a quick overview of what you need to know about wireless protocols, security, and network connections for remote work.

What is 802.11? Should I invest in 802.11n (Wireless-N) devices? You'll often see wireless networks or network devices labeled as 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n. These are wireless technology standards that differ in terms of device compatibility, how fast information can be sent and received over the network, and how far devices can reliably be from the wireless signal source. If you're deciding on whether to buy the newest 802.11n (or Wireless-N) network device versus the more common 802.11g (Wireless-G) hardware, consider your specific usage circumstances: can you upgrade all wireless devices connecting over the network to the same protocol? Will you be connecting to wireless hotspots that only support 802.11g? Which protocols are supported by your company office? In general, 802.11g offers the greatest compatibility, but the future is in 802.11n.

What is WEP/WPA? Which is best? WEP and WPA are encryption protocols for wireless networks, designed to protect information that travels over the network. To connect to a WEP- or WPA-secured wireless network, you'll need to input the security key or passphrase for the network. WPA2 is the most recent--and strongest--encryption protocol for wireless networks today (WEP, by contrast, is not very secure).

What is a hotspot? In a nutshell, a hotspot is a public place where you can connect to a wireless network for Internet access. As long as you have a wireless-enabled device and have paid any required usage/subscription fees (if applicable), you can connect to a hotspot's wireless network and go online using their Internet service.

Where can I find free hotspots? Many retailers and dining places, such as Panera Bread and Barnes & Noble, offer free wireless Web access; some others, such as Starbucks, are free for subscribers of certain cellular providers. You may also find free wi-fi at airports, libraries, and other places where lots of people gather.

How do I connect to a hotspot/wireless access point? The process of connecting to a wireless access point (AP) or router at a hotspot is essentially the same as connecting to any other wireless AP (at home, for example, or at the office). Your wireless adapter software or your operating system will most likely let you know when you are in range of a wireless network, and then you can choose to join the wireless network (entering in the security key if necessary) after accepting the hotspot's terms and conditions.

What Linux Users Should Know About Open Hardware

Business and free software have been intertwined for years, but the two often misunderstand one another. That's not surprising -- what is just a business to one is way of life for the other. But the misunderstanding can be painful, which is why debunking it is a worth the effort.

An increasingly common case in point: the growing attempts at open hardware, whether from Canonical, Jolla, MakePlayLive, or any of half a dozen others. Whether pundit or end-user, the average free software user reacts with exaggerated enthusiasm when a new piece of hardware is announced, then retreats into disillusionment as delay follows delay, often ending in the cancellation of the entire product.

It's a cycle that does no one any good, and often breeds distrust – and all because the average Linux user has no idea what's happening behind the news.

My own experience with bringing products to market is long behind me. However, nothing I have heard suggests that anything has changed. Bringing open hardware or any other product to market remains not just a brutal business, but one heavily stacked against newcomers.

Both the manufacturing and distribution of digital products is controlled by a relatively small number of companies, whose time can sometimes be booked months in advance. Profit margins can be tight, so like movie studios that buy the rights to an ancient sit-com, the manufacturers usually hope to clone the success of the latest hot product. As Aaron Seigo told me when talking about his efforts to develop the Vivaldi tablet, the manufacturers would much rather prefer someone else take the risk of doing anything new.

Not only that, but they would prefer to deal with someone with an existing sales record who is likely to bring repeat business.

Besides, the average newcomer is looking at a product run of a few thousand units. A chip manufacturer would much rather deal with Apple or Samsung, whose order is more likely in the hundreds of thousands.

Faced with this situation, the makers of open hardware are likely to find themselves cascading down into the list of manufacturers until they can find a second or third tier manufacturer that is willing to take a chance on a small run of something new.

They might be reduced to buying off-the-shelf components and assembling units themselves, as Seigo tried with Vivaldi. Alternatively, they might do as Canonical did, and find established partners that encourage the industry to take a gamble. Even if they succeed, they have usually taken months longer than they expected in their initial naivety.

However, finding a manufacturer is only the first obstacle. As Raspberry Pi found out, even if the open hardware producers want only free software in their product, the manufacturers will probably insist that firmware or drivers stay proprietary in the name of protecting trade secrets.

This situation is guaranteed to set off criticism from potential users, but the open hardware producers have no choice except to compromise their vision. Looking for another manufacturer is not a solution, partly because to do so means more delays, but largely because completely free-licensed hardware does not exist. The industry giants like Samsung have no interest in free hardware, and, being new, the open hardware producers have no clout to demand any.

Besides, even if free hardware was available, manufacturers could probably not guarantee that it would be used in the next production run. The producers might easily find themselves re-fighting the same battle every time they needed more units.

As if all this is not enough, at this point the open hardware producer has probably spent 6-12 months haggling. The chances are, the industry standards have shifted, and they may have to start from the beginning again by upgrading specs.

Despite these obstacles, hardware with some degree of openness does sometimes get released. But remember the challenges of finding a manufacturer? They have to be repeated all over again with the distributors -- and not just once, but region by region.

The Truth About Big Data

Running late to the big data party? Don't worry, says Gartner, a technology research firm. It's just getting started.

Gartner has good news for IT and business managers who feel their organizations are missing the big data hype train. While interest is high, adoption rates indicate that the market for big data solutions is in its infancy.

Seventy-three percent of organizations surveyed by the research group said that they are investing or plan to invest in big data technologies. Yet, only 13 percent said that they had deployed related solutions.

Big data projects are stalling out in the planning stage, Gartner discovered. "The biggest challenges that organizations face are to determine how to obtain value from big data, and how to decide where to start," said the firm in a statement. "Many organizations get stuck at the pilot stage because they don't tie the technology to business processes or concrete use cases."

Once big data initiatives get underway, Gartner recommends that organizations sweat the small stuff.

Another big data myth is that individual data quality flaws have little impact on big data analytics due to the "law of large numbers." Not so, warned Ted Friedman, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner.

"In reality, although each individual flaw has a much smaller impact on the whole dataset than it did when there was less data, there are more flaws than before because there is more data. Therefore, the overall impact of poor-quality data on the whole dataset remains the same," said Friedman in prepared remarks.

Gartner researchers also cleared up some misconceptions about big data and its impact on the data center.

Big data won't eliminate the need for data integration. IT managers banking on "schema on read" approaches to enable flexible methods of processing information may be in for a shock. "In reality, most information users rely significantly on 'schema on write' scenarios in which data is described, content is prescribed, and there is agreement about the integrity of data and how it relates to the scenarios," stated Gartner.

Gartner is also combating the notion that it is pointless to invest in a data warehouse for advanced analytics. And no, "data lakes," vast repositories that store data in their native format, won't replace data warehouses. "Data warehouses already have the capabilities to support a broad variety of users throughout an organization. [Information management] leaders don't have to wait for data lakes to catch up," said Nick Heudecker, research director at Gartner, in a statement.

IBM Boosts Cloud Resiliency

There are a lot of different reasons why organization choose to leverage the cloud, including disaster recover and resiliency. Disaster recovery is a business that IBM knows well and is now expanding in the cloud era with a new cloud resiliency center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

IBM's entire Research Triangle Park campus covers four million square feet of space. The new cloud resilience center covers 72,000 square feet.

"This is a new center, not a retrofit," Mike Errity, Vice President, IBM Business Continuity and Resiliency Services, told Datamation. "The new center represents IBM's single largest USA cloud resiliency site investment." He said the company could not comment on the dollar amount.

Errity added that IBM has more than 50 years of business continuity and disaster recovery experience with over 150 resiliency centers across 50 countries. He added that 90 percent of those centers have cloud resiliency capabilities.

At the Research Triangle Park location, the new cloud resiliency solutions are offered on IBM Softlayer and can accommodate public, private and hybrid IT environments.

From a resiliency perspective, for the new center, IBM has multiple components in place. Errity said that IBM is leveraging a dedicated multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) wide area backbone network known as RecoveryNet. The RecoveryNet is a high-capacity, private utility network dedicated to IBM Cloud Recovery services.

"RecoveryNet supports cross-site connectivity requirements, client test and recovery solutions," Errity said.

The networking resiliency uses dual path fiber and makes use of multiple carriers including CenturyLink, Level 3, Verizon, Time Warner Telecom, and AT&T, with Frontier as the serving Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC).

By using multiple carriers, IBM is able to address any potential latency issues with customer sites. "For latency sensitive applications, IBM engages the carriers to identify the most effective route," Errity said. "WAN acceleration is available based on clients requirements."

While the new center in Research Triangle Park is opening, IBM has plans for more to open soon. Errity said that later this year IBM will be opening another new cloud-based resiliency center in Mumbai, India.

"These new facilities, which will join the 150 resiliency centers and 15 other global centers planned by SoftLayer, will speed up recovery times by virtually eliminating network latency while allowing businesses to manage federal and local data residency compliance regulations," Errity said.

MDM Falling Short in the Enterprise

Despite skyrocketing growth in recent years, mobile device management (MDM) providers still have their work cut out for them, suggests a new study (PDF) from defense contractor Raytheon and the Ponemon Institute.

After interviewing 618 workers charged with overseeing security and mobile at their firms -- 57 percent of which identified as senior executives and managers -- Ponemon discovered that MDM vendors still have a long way to go. Half of those polled expressed dissatisfaction with their current mobile security solutions.

Nearly a third of respondents (30 percent) admitted to having no mobile security capabilities in place. Another 33 percent said that they safeguard their data by encrypting data in flight or stored on a device.

A slim majority, 57 percent, were in favor of keeping data off mobile devices with virtualization-based MDM platforms. Many companies are finding it tough to encourage both mobile productivity and security, with security often losing out in that battle, the report found.

Fifty-two percent of respondents said that their organizations and employees often undermine data security practices to bask in the efficiency-enhancing benefits of mobile device use. This findings don't bode well for a tomorrow's workforces, the study suggests.

Currently, one-third of employees are exclusively dependent on mobile devices to perform their work duties. Within the next twelve months, that figure is expected to hit 47 percent. On average, each enterprise organization polled by Ponemon manages nearly 20,000 mobile devices, a number that is expected to grow to 28,000 within a year.

Despite growing mobile device adoption, 64 percent of respondents said that they lack the budget to combat threats to mobile security, nor do they expect those funds to materialize. "The average budget that is considered adequate is approximately $5.5 million annually - or $278 per managed device," stated the report.

Ashok Sankar, senior director of product management and strategy at Raytheon Cyber Products, said the findings highlight the "struggle to find the right balance between the cyber security needs of an organization and the efficiencies demanded by employees to do their jobs," in a statement. "Mobile devices are becoming a dominant workplace tool, and organizations must adopt a mobile strategy with data security technologies that enable employees to work effectively without putting sensitive information at risk."

How IBM's Watson Could Do For Analytics What Search Did for Google

IBM announced a new initiative this week to use a freemium model to move Watson, their English language AI interface for analytics, into the market more aggressively. But what I find most interesting is that this move mirrors pretty closely what Google did with search – it’s a huge step toward IBM owning the analytics market.

In fact, ironically, I think the only real competitor emerging is Google, which will make for an interesting battle.

What’s Important in Analytics

One of the problems with engineers is that they tend to focus more on the plumbing than the interface.  They’ll build incredibly complex tools that even they themselves would have trouble using.

What made companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Google different (at least when they were on the rise) was that they focused much more on the user interface and making technology easier to learn and use. This is why products like IBM PROFs fell off in the face of word processors like the one in Microsoft Office. You didn’t have to learn a brand new way of doing something, you could just launch the tool and in a few minutes you were creating usable results.

Google didn’t launch search, they just made it easy and they found a way to monetize it.  Their magic was in looking at the searches others did, learning from them, and then applying what was learned to make subsequent searches easier and more successful.  We had indexing long before Google but everyone started from scratch, Google implemented intelligence first, reduced massively the time it took to get meaningful results and now dominates the market.  In a way, Google Search was the first example of what could be done with an intelligent product and it made the firm billions.

So what is important with Analytics is similar to what is important in any product: how easily you can become expert enough to get results you can use.

The Problem with Analytics

Much of the difficulty with IT products is that they are created by people who are far removed from the tasks these tools perform.  Programmers and software engineers are expert at creating programs but they know virtually nothing about what it takes to run a business, sell a product, or build anything but a program.  This is why so often when a customer provides a set of what they think are precise requirements and gets back something that doesn’t look anything like what they asked for.

We often talk about analytics needing data scientists who have a unique skill set, allowing them to get out the answers needed from highly complex data repositories.  Since the results of the analysis are supposed to lead to better executive decisions the ideal skill set would have been an MBA Data Scientist, yet I’ve actually never seen one of those. Folks who are good at deep analysis and folks that are good at business tend to be very different folks, and data scientists are in very short supply at the moment.

So a data scientist knows how to talk to an analytics program but doesn’t know business and the executive knows business and doesn’t know how to talk to a data analytics program  – and neither of these folks is likely to learn the skills of the other.  So what you need is an analytics engine that can learn and then create an interface that a business person can use.

Wrapping Up:  The Final Shoe

This takes us full circle back to this latest IBM announcement.  How IBM came to dominate the computer space in the first place was with a unique model where they leased but didn’t sell their hardware.  The business model was as innovative, perhaps more so, than the hardware and software solution.  It lowered the entry risk and up front financial cost of buying a mainframe and they owned the market.

The Freemium model has similar advantages. So if you wrap a product that line executives should prefer with an economic model that removes most of the financial barriers, you should end up with a solution that does for IBM what Search did for Google. And that could do some interesting things to the analytics market, creating a similar set of conditions to those that put IBM on top of technology in the last century.

Revolutionary New App Replaces All Business Communication

The creator of Lotus Notes launched a new communication app this week.

Former Lotus, IBM and Microsoft executive Ray Ozzie, as well as Matt Pope and Eric Patey, released an iOS app called Talko.

The app is revolutionary because it replaces not only conference calls, not only meetings themselves, but phone calls.

Business communication falls into two very separate temporal categories: Real-time (phone calls and texting) and asynchronous (voice-mail and email).

It also can be divided into two archival categories: Namely, recorded and searchable (email and chat) and not usually recorded and not searchable (phone calls, hallway conversations).

What's interesting about Talko is that it’s both real time and asynchronous, and it's also archival. Oh, and it's also ambient.

Let's talk about why Talko is revolutionary.

Talko of the Town

Talko is real-time and asynchronous, but it also makes communication ambient.

The way Talko is being described is that it's an app that functions like text, VoIP calls, push-to-talk, group chat and picture sharing. But suggesting that it offers a list of communication options misses the entire point.

It doesn't have each of these media, and you have to choose one. It's all of them at the same time in the same conversation!

Let me take you on an epic journey of business communication to demonstrate the incredible power and flexibility of Talko -- a complete conversation lifecycle.

John is a designer, working on a contract basis with the marketing department of a medium-size travel company. He has a question about the direction of a marketing campaign. He would normally call, but instead he calls using Talko. John taps the profile picture of his main contact, Janet. They're connected like a phone call, and have a brief conversation that involves text, a couple of pictures John took of his progress, and the spoken conversation.

Janet can't answer the question, though, so she adds her team in the same way John added her, by tapping on an icon -- in this case, a group she created on Talko. It's a five-member team, but only two team members are available to talk. They don't know the answer. So everyone on the team presses the big microphone button on their Talko apps, which keeps the call "live," but mutes their mics -- and they go on working.

One of the team members, Rafe, actually knows the answer to the question. And he knows the question, too. The reason is that, after his meeting, Talko notifies him of the conversation. He opens the app, and listens to the conversation, which is displayed along with the text and photos, just as if he were part of the live conversation. He presses his microphone and gives the answer, and also proposes a creative idea, then goes into another meeting while all others on the call are notified and presented with the recording of his comments.

The next day, having attempted to solve the problem, John returns to the conversation. He types in the words that will go with the campaign, and uses Talko to take a picture of a sketch he's working on for the imagery. They all get it instantly. Those available reply. Everyone else will see it later. They move on with the project, creating and developing different conversations.

At some points in the process, John makes the conversation ambient, meaning that it's there on a push-to-talk basis. Every once in a while, he simply asks a question. And whoever is listening can choose to chime in with input. The interaction is just like it would be if they were working in the same room.

One year later, John is collecting a design award for his work on the project. Before he goes up on stage, he realizes he wants to thank the person whose brilliant idea early in the project lead to his stellar work. So he quickly searches Talko, finds the conversation and the part where Rafe suggested the idea.

This hypothetical example represents a very basic, minimal use of Talko. Yet it illustrates a single, sustained conversation over a single project that's both real-time and asynchronous, as well as ambient and which is useful and useable long after the conversation is over.

The conversation would have replaced countless phone calls, meetings, texting emails, and didn't involve any of the normal wasted time. A complete record is available to all.

So How Does All This Work?

When you first install Talko (it's available for iOS only, but Android and Web versions are coming), you're invited to point Talko at your contacts, which it mines for Talko users. Once identified, they show up in your list of potential conversationalists.

3 Mobile Apps Marketers Can Use to Organize their Work Life

We tend to think of mobile apps as distractions: we can lose hours a day on Facebook or playing the latest mobile game. However, some mobile apps are excellent for helping you organize your life and more efficiently use your time. Here are three of the top apps for iOS and Android, which can help you become ultra productive and organize your time.

1. Evernote

Available: iOS, Android;
Cost: Free

Evernote is the undisputed king of organization apps, allowing you to carry all the documents, notes, checklists and other information you need in one trusty app. Evernote integrates with all parts of your offline and online life, allowing you to keep everything organized in the cloud. See a job that you want to apply for later on the web? Clip it to Evernote, add a due date, and make notes about how you can fill in the application form. Want to keep all of your receipts organized?

Simply take a picture with your phone and save them to Evernote, where the Evernote Optical Character Recognition software makes them searchable. Evernote is a big player in the organization industry, and that means that the available integration options are limitless. If you prefer to handwrite your notes, but are worried about losing them, you can buy an Evernote Moleskin notebook, snap a picture of your notes, and Evernote makes your handwriting searchable.

2. Timeful

Available: iOS; Free

Timeful is a new player in the organization and productivity app market, and yet it has already gotten the seal of approval from key industry notables as an app to keep an eye on. Timeful is based around one key idea: if you schedule items from your to-do list, you are more likely to actually do them. Timeful then takes this idea to a whole new leave by ‘suggesting’ you do certain items on your to-do list when it sees free spots in your calendar. Timeful helps you to make time, ensuring that you are making the best use out of every minute of your working day.

Perhaps the best thing about Timeful is that the more you use it, the more it learns.

If Timeful sees that you get more to-dos done in the morning, it will suggest you more to-dos before lunchtime. If Timeful learns that you like to go to the gym after work, it will fit gym time into your schedule.

Timeful’s other flagship feature is its ‘Habits’ function: Timeful tries to help you create good habits by encouraging you to set aside time to do them each week. If you want to ensure you take your medication every day, Timeful will schedule it for you. If you want to send an hour a week learning some Russian, Timeful will make time for you. Timeful is the to-do/calendar/personal assistant hybrid you have always needed, right in your pocket.

3. IFTTT

Available iOS, Android; Free

If This Then That (IFTTT) has been known for a while in tech circles as a simple yet powerful app that links together many of your other apps in order to organize your life. The logic is simple: by doing something on one app, something automatically happens in another app. This may sound quite rudimentary, but the actual effects are outstanding. Here are just some of the examples:

Ever wanted to escape an awkward meeting? You can set up an IFTTT ‘recipe’ that allows you to text ‘#helpme’ to an IFTTT number which then causes your phone to ring, allowing you to make a quick escape.Use IFTTT to send yourself an automatic notification if there is rain forecast to remind you as you leave the house each morning to remember your umbrella.Use IFTTT to automatically mute your phone when you arrive at a certain location, like your office.Use IFTTT to push out an update on one of your social media networks to all of your social media networks. This is especially handy for getting around problems with Instagram and Twitter: using IFTTT, you can get Twitter to post your Instagram pictures as native Twitter pictures instead of just a link.

You can get the most out of IFTTT by using an Android phone because, unlike with Apple’s closed iOS ecosystem, IFTTT can control and access all parts of your phone. Want your phone to automatically text your partner saying ‘I’m on my way home!’ as you leave your office? IFTTT can do that. IFTTT’s Android app makes it easier than ever to set up IFTTT recipes yourself or find recipes others have created. You can automate and organize your life with the click of a button.

VMware Server VMRUN commands – [Reference for Legacy VMware]

Here is a legacy reference for anyone still on VMware Server. In January 2010, VMware announced the End of Support for VMware Server with support ending on June 30, 2011. Users are free to continue using VMware Server but are recommended to migrate to another VMware offering to gain the benefits of newer technologies.

There are several VMware offerings that can replace VMware Server depending on the functionality needed. These offerings range from VMware Player for running one or two virtual machines to VMware vSphere for running more than 100 virtual machines with centralized management and cloud scalability.

VMWARE Server VMRUN Command line

To list the currently running virtual machines on a VMware Server host:
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u HostUser -p HostPassword list

The VMware Tools installation process may be initiated from the command line as follows, although completion of the installation will need to be performed at the console of the guest operating system:
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword installTools “[standard] VM/VM.vmx”

To register a virtual machine with the inventory on a specific VMware host, use the register commands as follows:
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword register “[standard] VM/VM.vmx”

Similarly, to unregister a virtual machine from the host inventory:
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword unregister “[standard] VM/VM.vmx”

How to STOP a VMware Server WorkStation
 vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword stop “[standard] VM/VM.vmx” soft

How to START a VMware Server WorkStation
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword reset “[standard] VM/VM.vmx”

The following example takes a snapshot (named MySnapshot) of a virtual machine using the snapshot command:
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword snapshot “[standard] VM/VM.vmx” MySnapshot

The corresponding command to revert the virtual machine to the snapshot state uses the revertToSnapshot command and would read as follows:
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword revertToSnapshot “[standard] VM/VM.vmx” MySnapshot

Note that if the virtual machine is running at the time the revertToSnapshot command is issued, the virtual machine will be placed into the suspended state while the restoration process is performed. To resume the suspended virtual machine using the restored state, it may be resumed using the vmrun start command as follows:
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword start “[standard] VM/VM.vmx”

Finally, an existing snapshot may be deleted using the deleteSnapshot command:
vmrun -T server -h https://IPADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:PORT/sdk -u root -p mypassword deleteSnapshot “[standard] VM/VM.vmx” MySnapshot

VMRUN Usage:
-T Type=ws “Work Station”, server “for Server 2.0? and server1 “for Server 1.0?
-h Host Name
-P Host Port
-u User “Not needed in Workstation”
-p Password “Not needed in Workstation”
-gu Guest User
-gp Guest Password

How to create shareworthy content

In the world of business, competition is fierce and getting an edge in a particular industry or niche can be tough.  Not only is it necessary to stand out from the crowd, you also have to find new and relevant ways to set yourself above and beat the competition.  What are some ways that this can be done?  One idea is content creation. Content is king, but it must also be valuable to the reader.   Sharing is great, but it isn’t enough.  Your content should be valuable enough to scream two words to every reader, “SHARE ME”!

Why is Sharing Important?
We want the world to see our businesses and products, hear them, and share them, with the ultimate goal of gaining traffic.

One of the best ways to promote your content is through social media, however, it cannot be successful if the content you’re sharing isn’t valuable or engaging your readers. Share-worthy content is noteworthy because it compels your followers to share it.  The more likes, re-tweets and +1s you get, the broader the exposure, the more chances for it to go viral.

The noteworthiness of sharable content doesn’t stop at exposure. Crafting content with the potential to go viral involves the creation and establishment of credibility and followers. The more readers trust you and your content, the more shares you’ll rack up.

What are some good ways to get shares?
Sharable content requires a secret ingredient: quality. Anyone can write, but it takes a special pen to use the special ingredient properly. Whether you’re a seasoned content creator or not, here are 9 ways to help you get some shares:

Write about what Engages your Reader: Be authentic, relevant, and transparent.  Get readers to interact and participate; write things like “Like, Comment, Share”.  Give readers incentives like winning prizes, or produce content that is emotional to readers.Write about the Passion Behind the Business: The Content Marketing Institute says, “In person, it’s far easier to have a memorable personal characteristic that people will take away… Online is harder.” Are you going to go current and relevant, or super visual? Will you write from an actual persona or a specific point of view? What’s your niche? Hint: your mojo is likely fired by the passion behind your business.Pick Catchy Headings: They’re the first thing readers see. They need to catch the eye, make a point, or perk curiosity. Your main headline has to be enticing enough to click. Your subheadings need to be engaging enough to keep the reader on the page.Best Bait Comes on a Great Hook: Any good fisherman will tell you that bait matters. With every piece of content, you are fishing for shares. The best bait is a great hook. Craft such a hook by immediately piquing your reader’s curiosity or stirring something deep inside of them.Deliver a Bang: Share-worthy content is like dynamite; it delivers a BANG! Content that goes viral usually has a shock value. It’s often edgy, even controversial. Throwing a stick of dynamite into your content will make it appealing to folks outside of the industry while keeping it fresh for those already interested in the subject material.May it Easy to Understand: Digestible content is well formatted and easy to read. Break it down by using headings, crafting precise (and short) paragraphs, staying on topic, using proper grammar and spelling, and ensuring the content isn’t overly lengthy. Digestible content is often shared before the sharer finishes reading it.Back Up Claims: Backing up your claims is important. Think about the experts in your industry. It’s likely you constantly see their claims backed up by hard evidence; it’s a contributing factor to why you consider them experts. Therefore, you should cite your sources and show relevant data. According to Moz, “citing a source is as simple as linking to the webpage from which you got the information.” Building citations and using hard evidence – such as data and statistics – to back up your claims increases your credibility. The higher your credibility, the more likely people are to share your content.  It’s no secret that guest blogging has come under fire. When creating content with a view toward what we’ll dub “sharability,” leverage your troops. Recruit if you have to! Build in links and point toward highly credible sources.Offer Value: Don’t mistake entertainment for value. While catchy headings, a great hook, and a few sticks of dynamite provide entertainment, your readers also want hardcore value. In other words, they want solutions or answers regarding your subject matter.Make Some Noise: Share-worthy content is loud. It’s like jumping up and down, waving your arms, clapping your hands and stomping your feet. It DEMANDS attention. You can make noise by constantly creating differently. Apply steps 1 through 8 to presentations, infographics, webinars, podcasts, case studies, white papers, eBooks, and any other content type you select.Hire a Pro: If you find yourself in a tough niche, investing in a professional writer is an obvious idea. Nevertheless, do you know how to pick a high quality pro? Search for a credentialed individual. Not only should they have experience tackling your niche, but they should also be ready and able to supply samples and/or references.Don’t Be Afraid To Experiment
What is the one thing that almost all successful brands have in common? They are constantly evaluating what works and what doesn’t. They aren’t frightened of experimentation. They try everything, from different platforms to types of content. You need to do the same.  Use the 10 tips we’ve discussed as guidelines for crafting shareable content. Don’t be afraid of stepping outside of your comfort zone. You will never know what will send your content viral until you give it a go.

I Can’t Believe I’m Doing this Again!

One of the nice things about writing again, is that it doesn’t require a huge monitor.  Therefore, I am not chained to my upstairs office.  I can do it virtually anywhere.  :-)
In our 35 years of marriage, there have been only a few instances when my wife realized what a cleaver fellow I am – maybe three. I think one occurred yesterday.

As you may be aware, I am winding down my career as an educator.  My wife, concerned about identity security, has spent parts of the last couple of days looking for my social security number included in two large file cabinets of documents from 19 years of clients and jobs.  She commented, as we were walking up to North Hills yesterday, that I had accomplished a lot in my years as an independent and been part of some pretty exciting developments in education and technology.
Then she said, “You should write a book about all of this.”

My reply was simple, the same that I’ve said to colleagues who have recently asked, “So now that you’re not traveling so much, are you going to write a new book?”

“No!”

“I’m through!  I’m tired!  ..and writing is really hard work for me…”

Yet, this morning, as I woke and lay in bed, my mind was going like it hasn’t in many months, seeming to have realized that in some deep and evil corner of my brain, the decision has been made.  I had an outline written out by 8:30 this morning – for a new book about the history of educational technology.

I really can’t believe that I’m Doing this Again!

Are you amateur for internet marketing or internet money?
If you are reading this blog now you have known we can earn money from internet. More people are misunderstanding about e-money. May be you are also can be one of them. Because of these reasons may you will can’t earn money
Misconceptions
If you have these. Remove them all and just start today
1.     Can earn money free
You can learn something for free. But you can’t earn money for free. May be you have seen about e-money with word “FREE”. But there is a one thing if you have knowledge, skills, talents, and then you can earn money.

So if you come to earn money free you will stop this soon.

3.     Earn money without a knowledge
If you want to earn money you should have a general knowledge about some field. Such as programming, accounting, marketing and web designing etc.

Another misunderstand, can’t you believe you can’t earn a living income from internet. If you don’t know about these you will tell “cannot”. There thousands of people who earning a living income

5.     E-money is not a professional occupation
Of course. This is a professional occupation. The people who earning e-money; they call it internet marketing, internet entrepreneur, online marketer.
